Master Title
Effectiveness of an Occupational Therapy Training Program Using Recreational Activities to develop certain Life Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Master Abstract
Life skills for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are among the fundamental aspects that require early and intensive intervention due to the challenges they face in communication and social interaction. Learning these skills, such as self-care, time management, and basic communication, contributes to enhancing their independence and improving their quality of life, The current study aimed to improve certain life skills in children with ASD through a functional therapy training program using recreational activities. The number of participants in the research reached (10) children with simple autism spectrum disorder ,aged) 4-9( years, divided into two groups: an experimental group consisting of )5( children (4 males and 1 female) with a mean age of) 7.8( and standard deviation of )2.1(, and a control group consisting of )5( children (4 males and 1 female) with a mean age of )6.2( and standard deviation of) 1.3(, and their level of the disorder was from (56-75) with a mean of )65.5( and a standard deviation of)5.6 (on the low-functional autism spectrum disorder estimation scale (prepared by: Adel Abdullah, and Ahmed Azzazi, 2024), and an intelligence degree ranging from (75-95) with a mean of )79.8( and a standard deviation of) 7.6 (on an interstitial scale of intelligence in its fifth form. He relied on the experimental two-group method (experimental and control), using the following tools: the life skills scale for children with autism spectrum disorder (prepared by: Ahmed Azzazi), the program based on occupational therapy using recreational activities (prepared by: the researcher). The results of the study revealed statistically significant differences at the (0.05) level between the mean ranks of the scores of children with ASD in the experimental group in both the pre- and post-test measurements on the Life Skills Scale, in favor of the post-test. Additionally, there were statistically significant differences at the (0.01) level between the mean ranks of the scores of the experimental and control groups in the post-test in favor of the experimental group. The results also indicated no statistically significant differences between the mean ranks of the scores of the experimental group members in the post-test and follow-up measurements, indicating the lasting effect of the program.
